About

“Instruments sound interesting, not because of their sound, but because of the relationship a player has with them. Instrumentalists build a rapport with their instruments, which is what you like and respond to.” – Brian Eno

“Everything happens kind of the way it’s supposed to happen, and we just watch it unfold. And you can’t control it. Looking back, you can’t say, ‘I should’ve… ‘ You didn’t, and had you, the outcome would have been different.” – Rick Rubin

“A good performance will override any production idea or sonic idea that you can have.” – Daniel Lanois

Donald Mackay is a multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, mechanical engineer, and maths scholar. He dreamed up, designed and built Spaces Between Studio with visual Artist, percussionist, and Carpenter Aaron Sinclair in the early 2000’s. Their combination of science and artistry resulted in a beautiful, simple and effective space to create and capture sound.

In the fall of 2013, Don partnered with singer songwriter, engineer and producer David Scholten. David had previously spent most of his time on the other side of the microphone as the lead singer in Halifax bands Acres and Acres and Down with the Butterfly.  He brought to the studio a wealth of experience from the performer’s point of view, an infusion of energy, and upgraded equipment.
